Louisville’s Courier-Journal as a rule promotes legal abortion. On January third, a nurse practitioner, Constance Story, wrote a very brief Op-ed, giving her reaction to a statement by KY Republican Representative Ken Fleming. Fleming represents District 48, portions of Jefferson and Oldham counties.

Rep. Fleming stated during a presentation at the Louisville Forum (link) December meeting, that the topic of abortion exceptions had come up at a Republican caucus retreat after the November 7 General Election.

“I know there are some things in the works. To what degree, I don’t know, but there has been a lot of discussions in terms of trying to address that issue, …I think it became pretty clear not only in other parts of the United States but also here in Kentucky that there was definitely a message that was sent. So, I think at least on our side, on the Republican side, we’re taking that very seriously, and we’re having some good conversations about that.”

The “message that was sent” referred to the defeat of the “Yes for Life” Amendment 2, which stated: “To protect human life, nothing in this (KY) constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.”

Nurse Story wrote:
“I cannot begin to state how relieved I was to hear that these men have my future and the future of every woman I know firmly under their control. What imbecile would ever think that I, a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner with over 30 years’ experience could possibly know more about my health concerns than the boys in Frankfort? Will they be performing my exams personally or will they be content to kick open the office door and leer over my MD’s shoulder? My husband may need a hip replacement. Will Ken be performing the surgery, or should I call my BMW mechanic? I’ve noticed he really knows his way around a ball joint.”
